In 2014 we entered a competition called the Better Living Challenge, run by the Western Cape Government and CCDI (now CDI). Our submission was based on a shack that could be incrementally added to over time, using the sandbag/EcoBeam technology. We won the public vote (but not the main event) and realised that the real people we needed to convince were the people living in the informal community that we had been working with for the 5 years previously. Power Construction kindly donated the concrete raft foundation and work started in May 2015 on this incremental house (which actually started as two single storey semi-detached shacks). Our intention was to do something slowly, in conjunction with community members to see this (often rejected) typology of the zinc clad single storey shack become a completed two storey plastered house. In the end it took 2.5 years and we learnt a great deal along the way. For a time it was our manufacturing HQ before we left Sweet Home in 2019.
