Self Build Support

Here’s how UBU assists you to build your own home or place of belonging

If you are interested in playing a more activated role in the building of your home, then we want to assist you in any way we can, from feasibility to completion.

Feasibility Study

At the start of the project, we can undertake a feasibility study; analysing your site, setting out a draft proposal, with associated architectural and structural details and costs for the job. We can even create a 3D model of what the structure will look like. Most of the design thinking happens at this stage.

Planning Stage

When you are happy with what you have got then we will activate an Architect partner to submit the plans on your behalf. We have a Structural Engineer who has many years of experience building with sandbags waiting in the wings.

Training

If the client wants to get their hands dirty then it might be a good idea to join one of our training days, run by our trainer Tony Florence. It's a day broken into two: Theory in the morning and practical in the afternoon where the participants get to actually build a frame and fill the bags in the wall.

Building Stage

In a formal build, the project will need to be registered with the NHBRC and also with Agrément SA. We have an inhouse builder registered with both entities who can assist in varying capacities. If you want to be more hands-on, you can, and this can be reflected in the price.

Building Stage - Manufacturing

UBU will be responsible for providing the Sandbags for the job (with any extra over bags being discounted to the client) and the EcoBeams which are made to measure with no waste. We will deliver to site and erect on the same day.

Building Stage - Project Management

UBU can play a role of project management for the project but this could easily be done by the client if they would prefer.

Tailor-made approach

We can do as much or as little as you would like us to do, all depending on your budget and desire to get involved. The more the client gets involved, the cheaper it will be and the greater the level of satisfaction at the end of the build process.

“Since the beginning of civilisation, we have built our own shelters with our communities and families. One of the reasons we chose this particular construction technique is that it gave us an opportunity to build a home with our family, for our family - to have three generations ranging from 3 years to 68 years old all working hands-on with me filled me with immense pride. Each bag we laid now has memories to go with it.”
